Short Address in Saudi Arabia: What It Is and How to Use It for Delivery

Anyone who has delivered in a Saudi city knows the problem: a customer gives a district and a landmark, 'next to the pharmacy, white building', and the driver circles the block for twenty minutes. The Saudi National Address was created to solve exactly this. This guide explains what it is, what a delivery business should collect and how to combine it with a map pin.

The details of the National Address system are managed by Saudi Post (SPL). Because services and rules can change, check the official Saudi Post website for current information.

What is the National Address?

The National Address is Saudi Arabia's standard way of describing a location, issued by Saudi Post (SPL) for homes, businesses and other buildings. A full address typically includes:

  • the building number (four digits),
  • the street name,
  • the district,
  • the city,
  • the postal code (five digits),
  • and an additional number (four digits).

What is the short address?

The short address is a compact code for the same location: four letters followed by four digits. It is much easier to type, say aloud or paste into a message than the full address. Customers can usually find theirs through the official Saudi Post channels, so ask for it at checkout or when taking the order.

Why it matters for delivery

A precise address is the first defence against failed deliveries. Drivers waste time when they have to phone for directions, and every phone call is a chance for the customer not to answer. A clear address gives:

  • fewer wrong turns and fewer calls,
  • shorter trips and more stops per day,
  • fewer failed deliveries from addresses that cannot be found,
  • an address you can compare against a pin and spot errors.

Read how to reduce failed deliveries for the other causes of failure.

What to collect from customers

  1. The name and a mobile number of the person who will receive the goods.
  2. The National Address fields, or the short address if the customer has it.
  3. A map pin or a link from a maps app for the exact entrance.
  4. Notes that help a driver: floor, flat number, gate, security desk, best time to call.

Keep these in one customer record. A customer may have several addresses, such as home, shop and warehouse, and each delivery should state which one it is going to.

Where the short address goes in Tafsee Logistics

In Tafsee Logistics every customer address has its own Short address field next to the building number, street, district, city, postal code and additional number. It accepts the 4 letters and 4 numbers (for example RRRD2929) and checks the format, so a typing mistake is caught while the customer is still on the phone. The address is then used on delivery trips and shown to the driver at the stop.

Adding a customer address: building number, street, district, city, postal code, additional number and the Short address field (4 letters and 4 numbers), then an optional map pin

Why a map pin still helps

A National Address points to a building, not to the door a driver needs. Large compounds, warehouses and shops with back entrances still cause confusion. A map pin shows the exact spot and can be opened in the driver's own maps app. Ideal practice is to hold both: the address for the record and the pin for the driver.

A good way to get a pin is to let the customer place it themselves on their phone, since they know where the door is. Where that is not possible, a location link copied from a maps app works too.

Common address mistakes

  • Typing the wrong digit, which sends the driver to the wrong building.
  • Mixing the building number and the additional number.
  • Using only a district, which is too wide to deliver to.
  • Old addresses. If a customer moves, update the record rather than retyping a delivery each time.
  • No phone number, so the driver cannot call when the pin does not help.

A short checklist

  1. Ask for the full address or the short address at the time of the order.
  2. Ask for a pin.
  3. Check the phone number format when you enter it.
  4. Show the delivery address to the driver in the order of stops.
  5. Record the reason when a delivery fails because of the address, so you can see how often it happens.

Common address mistakes in more detail

Confusing the two four-digit numbers

The full address typically has a building number and an additional number, both four digits. They are easy to swap when typed from memory, and a swapped pair points to the wrong place. Ask customers to copy them from their official address, not to retype them.

Mixed languages and spellings

A street may be written in Arabic or in English, with different spellings. If your team searches by street name, agree on how to record it, or rely on the code and the pin instead of the spelling.

Shared buildings

One building can hold many flats, offices or shops. The address brings the driver to the building, so add the floor, flat number or shop name in the notes.

A worked example

This is an illustration with invented details. A customer orders furniture and gives only a district and 'near the mosque'. The driver circles the area for 25 minutes, phones twice and the customer does not answer. The delivery fails. For the second attempt the office asks the customer for the short address and a map pin. The driver opens the pin in his maps app, reaches the door in a few minutes and the delivery succeeds. The cost of the failed first attempt was a wasted trip, which collecting the address and pin at the time of the order would have avoided.

Setting up your order form

  1. Make the address fields separate boxes, not one long text box, so nothing is skipped.
  2. Explain what the short address is and where to find it, with a link to the official service.
  3. Offer a way to share a map location, and say it helps the driver find the door.
  4. Check that the mobile number looks like a valid Saudi number before accepting the order.
  5. Let returning customers pick a saved address instead of typing it again.

Confirm on the official service

This guide describes the National Address in general terms. Fields, formats and services are set by Saudi Post (SPL) and can change. A customer can confirm their own details on the official National Address service, and you should confirm any rule you rely on there rather than on a blog post.

How Tafsee Logistics handles addresses

In Tafsee Logistics a customer record can hold several delivery addresses, each with Saudi national address fields and an optional map pin, plus a Saudi phone number. The pin can be set by using your location, searching a place or district, pasting a Google Maps or Apple Maps link or coordinates, moving the map under a fixed pin, or asking the customer to pin it through a one-time link that lasts 7 days or until used. A pin outside Saudi Arabia is refused.

Ready for Dispatch shows Add an address or Add a phone when something is missing. The driver app can navigate through the phone's own maps app. See customer map pins, delivery trips and the driver app. For more on the delivery process read what is last mile delivery, or visit the Tafsee Logistics overview and the pricing page.

For the National Address, Saudi Arabia delivery teams should collect the short address at the time of the order and keep the full fields for the driver.
