WhatsApp and SMS opt-in

A WhatsApp popup that collects numbers with clear consent

Tafsee collects the number and the consent. Your WhatsApp or SMS tool sends the messages.

A WhatsApp popup asks a visitor for their phone number and their permission to message them. In the Gulf, where many shoppers read WhatsApp long before they open an inbox, that number is often worth more than an email address. Tafsee Popup collects the number and the consent, and hands both to your sheet, CRM or automation. It does not send WhatsApp or SMS messages itself, and this page is clear about where that line sits.

What you get

  • WhatsApp opt-in templates

A 'WhatsApp opt-in' template with a number field and a consent box, written for different kinds of store, and an Arabic 'Cart reminder on WhatsApp' slide-in.

  • A phone field that opens the number pad

The phone field brings up the numeric keypad on mobile and rejects entries that are not a phone number. Label it 'WhatsApp number' so the visitor knows which one you want.

  • Consent kept as a record

Each lead stores whether the consent box was ticked, when, and the exact wording the visitor agreed to.

  • Numbers delivered where you work

Every number is saved in Tafsee, exportable as CSV, and sent on to Google Sheets, Slack, Zapier, Make or a webhook with a delivery log and retries.

  • Click-to-chat button

Set a button or the WhatsApp icon to open your wa.me link, for visitors who would rather start a chat than fill in a form.

  • Arabic and right-to-left

Arabic templates set the form, the button and the consent line right-to-left, and you write the consent sentence in your own words.

What a WhatsApp popup does, and what it does not

It helps to be exact here, because the two halves of WhatsApp marketing are done by different tools.

  • Tafsee Popup does the collecting. It shows the popup at the right moment, validates the number, records consent, and saves the lead.
  • Your messaging tool does the sending. Broadcasts, cart reminders, order updates and replies are sent by the WhatsApp Business app, a WhatsApp Business API provider, or your SMS service. Tafsee Popup does not send WhatsApp or SMS messages.

In practice the two connect through a Google Sheet your team works from, or through Zapier, Make or a webhook that adds each new number to your messaging tool automatically.

This matters most for the 'Cart reminder on WhatsApp' template. Its text promises to send the cart link. Keep that promise only if your WhatsApp tool really sends it; otherwise change the wording to something you will do, such as 'we will message you about your order'.

What to offer for a WhatsApp number

A phone number is more personal than an email, so the reason has to be stronger and more specific. Say what you will send and how often.

  • Restock and price-drop alerts for one product the visitor is looking at.
  • Order and delivery updates, which many Gulf shoppers expect on WhatsApp anyway.
  • New collection announcements, limited to a stated frequency such as 'at most once a week'.
  • A first-order code sent on WhatsApp, if your messaging tool is set up to send it. You can also show the code on the thank-you page so the visitor has it at once; see discount code popups.
  • A saved cart, offered on the cart page when a shopper is about to leave. The cart abandonment page covers the on-site side of that.

During Ramadan and other peak seasons a WhatsApp list earns its keep, because a short message about a one-day offer is read within the day.

Where the numbers go after the popup

Every lead is stored in Tafsee first. From the leads list you can filter by consent and export a CSV. From there the lead is delivered to the tools ticked for that campaign.

  • Google Sheets: one row per lead, with the phone, consent, campaign and page. Numbers that start with + are stored as text so the sheet does not mangle them.
  • Zapier, Make or a webhook: the route into a WhatsApp Business API provider or an SMS service. The lead arrives as JSON with the phone, consent and campaign.
  • Slack: an alert per new number, useful when a person replies by hand.

One limit to plan for: Mailchimp, Klaviyo and HubSpot match contacts by email address, so a form that asks for a phone number only cannot feed them. If you want the lead in one of those tools as well, add an email field next to the number. Brevo stores the phone in its SMS field when it is typed as a full international number.

Set up a phone number popup

  1. Design — start from the 'WhatsApp opt-in' template or add a phone field to any popup. Label it 'WhatsApp number', show the international format in the placeholder (for example +966 5X XXX XXXX), and add the consent box.
  2. Show when — pick the pages and the trigger. Phone numbers convert better after some engagement, so use scroll, time on page or exit intent, and hide the popup from visitors who have already signed up.
  3. Publish — tick Google Sheets, Zapier, Make or your webhook, send a test lead, and check the number arrives in the format your messaging tool accepts.

The phone field has no country picker. It accepts a number with or without a leading +, so asking for the full international format in the placeholder is what keeps your list usable.

If you only want visitors to start a chat, skip the form: set a button to open your wa.me link in a new tab. No number is collected that way, but it is the shortest path to a conversation.

It is a popup on your website that asks visitors for their WhatsApp number and permission to message them, usually in return for alerts, order updates or an offer. Some stores use the same name for a click-to-chat button; Tafsee Popup can do both.

Tafsee's own leads list with CSV export, plus Google Sheets, Slack, Zapier, Make and webhooks. Mailchimp, Klaviyo and HubSpot need an email address, so add an email field if you want the lead there too.

No. The field accepts a phone number of 7 to 20 digits, with or without a leading +, and has no country selector. Show the format you want in the placeholder, for example +971 50 123 4567.

Only if you will use both. Two fields get fewer sign-ups than one. A common pattern is the number as the required field and the email as optional, or two separate popups on different pages.
